Charlotte history archive map prototype
Charlotte's history, explored through the places it happened.
An interactive map for exploring Charlotte archive records by place, date, and historical theme.
The challenge
Historical records are easier to discover when visitors can connect them to familiar places and periods. A long archive list makes those relationships difficult to see.
Our approach
We shaped a map-first archive experience that brings records onto Charlotte's streets. Search, map clusters, a year range, and themed views give visitors several ways to explore the collection.
Inside the work
Place-based discovery
Search and map clusters help visitors move from a location to nearby archive records.
Layers of time
A year range reveals how the mapped collection changes across eras.
Themed views
Distinct map themes provide another route through Charlotte's history.
